Martin Mitterstieler, born in 1976 in Innsbruck, studied classical double bass and jazz bass at the Music School in Innsbruck and at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna. Since 1993, he has been a part of several music projects, including “Further Kind,” “Tangoboys,” “Lichtenberg,” “100min/h,” and “Silicone Pumpgun.” In 2010, he co-founded the Vienna electropop duo “The Bandaloop” with the Viennese singer and performer Barca Baxant. They performed extensively until 2015, including a 2012 performance as part of ImpulsTanz, and released multiple works, including EPs, albums, and singles with music videos. In parallel, Mitterstieler became a member of the music collective “Nowhere Train” in 2011, focusing on Americana, Folk, Indie, and Country genres. With the group, he released three albums and returned to his roots as a double bassist. In the 2012/2013 season at the Saarländisches Staatstheater, he was responsible for the composition of the music for the one-person play “Faustkampf” under the direction of Rebecca Seiler.
In 2017, the dance piece “My Name Is Legion” (choreographed by Liliana Barros, music by Martin Mitterstieler) premiered as part of the performance “KONJETZKY_BARROS” at the same theater. In December 2018, he arranged an aria from Sergei Rachmaninoff’s opera “Francesca da Rimini” for “Pantera” (choreographed by Liliana Barros) at the Theater in der Eisfabrik Hannover, and the piece was performed at the Tanzforum Berlin in March 2019, including a show at Dock 11. In the same month, “WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE” by Cat Jimenez and Maiko Sakurai-Karner, with music composed by Martin Mitterstieler, premiered at Imagetanz – Festival for New Choreography and Performance, held at the alternative venue of Vienna’s Brut im Augarten. Mitterstieler went on to compose more works for Liliana Barros, with “GAIA” premiering at the Staatstheater Mannheim in May 2019. In December 2020, the online project “INERTIA,” featuring music by Mitterstieler, was released, and in September 2021, “TECHNOFAUNA” premiered at the LOT Theater in Braunschweig. In 2022, Mitterstieler composed for Cat Jimenez’s dance piece “Losing Face,” which had its world premiere at the Imagetanz Festival at Brut Wien in March. In parallel, Igor Hauzenberger’s documentary film “Denn Sie wissen was Sie tun” premiered at the “Diagonale – Festival des österreichischen Films.”
Martin Mitterstieler composes electronic music for dance, film, radio, theater, and television, spanning genres such as country, electronica, and hardcore. He currently resides in Vienna as a composer, electronic musician, and producer.
